The useful rule is 60 cm of table width per person, and 90 cm of clearance from table edge to the nearest wall or sideboard. Sizes below that feel tight every single dinner.
Six to eight people
A 200 cm table seats six comfortably with serving dishes, or eight with a squeeze and no centrepiece. If your room allows only one dimension to grow, grow the length: depth buys elbows, length buys guests.
Try the walkway
Tape the footprint on the floor and leave it there for a week before you order. The room always looks bigger before it has a table in it – a workshop observation, but a true one.
