Oiled oak does not sit under a plastic film; it drinks the oil and dries from the inside. That is why it feels like wood instead of a laminate, and why morning light catches it the way it does.
The first year
In the first months the surface goes slightly darker where hands and mugs land. This is not damage; it is the finish settling into how you live. A yearly wipe with a lint-free cloth and the same oil closes the winter dryness in twenty minutes.
A repaired surface is better than a replaced one. That is the whole argument for oil.
If it scratches
Light scratches usually lift with a drop of oil and a thumb. Deeper marks need a light sand along the grain before oiling, which is exactly why we do not lacquer the tops. Twenty minutes of work, then years more of service.
